Much better than cheap intercoms, worth paying extra.

After buying two cheap intercoms so that I could talk to my mate while riding, both of which failed within hours, I decided to bite the bullet and shell out some serious cash (£145 in this case). The first unit I tried was a Freedconn TCOM which came with two sets of ear pieces - both sets of earpieces failed within an hour of use. The second one I bought was a BT-S2 - this one was hopeless, you couldn't hear a thing at speeds over 30 mph and the radio reception was dire. Today I tried out my Sena SMH10, which has been around now for a few years (since around 2010 I think). It has no radio, however you can pair it to a media player with Bluetooth. I paired up to my mates very cheap intercom with no problem and straight away the sound quality was obvious. You can turn it up seriously loud as well, which I found was needed once you got up to 55 mph or more, still nice and clear reception though. Because I bought a helmet specific version, for the Bell DLX Qualifier, it came with a special clamp that fits inside the helmet itself. It literally takes a second to attach and detach the unit to the clamp. The earpieces fit into special pockets built into the helmet and you don't even notice they are there as they do not press against your ears at all. It did take a good 10 minutes to get the screw that holds the clamp inside the helmet to grab, even though it appeared to be aligned correctly, but got there in the end. When operating the unit you get voice prompts like: "hello", "goodbye", "phone pairing", "phone paired", "universal intercom pairing", "intercom paired" etc., which really helps - you don't have to wonder if it is doing what you want it to do. Operation couldn't be easier with just two buttons to deal with. I paired the unit with my ancient flip phone and got my mum to call my phone and straight away the ringer sounded in the earpieces and with one tap I was talking to my mum. Another quick tap and the call was ended. I did come across one slight glitch - when I put my helmet on to ride home one of the earpieces wasn't working. I took the helmet back off to check the wires and couldn't see anything amiss. When I put the helmet back on both earpieces were working again! This may mean there is a loose connection or a broken wire somewhere, so I will keep an eye on it for a couple of weeks and if it happens again I will ask for a replacement. Hopefully it was just a one-off as the earpieces worked fine all the way back home. Despite being paired with a much cheaper unit I am impressed with the audio quality and would definitely recommend spending a bit extra, or should that be a lot extra, for the Sena. One definite grumble - the information says you get a two year warranty with Sena by registering the unit on their website. The website is clearly for American customers only as when you try to register the product it asks you to say what you paid for it and you cannot put a price in pounds in. It only gives you US Dollar options that bear no relation whatsoever to what you pay in the UK, so I was unable to complete the registration. For this reason I will return the unit to Amazon (who I bought it from) if I have any repeat of the earpiece malady. UPDATE I e-mailed Sena about the problem registering the unit and they e-mailed me back to confirm that the two year warranty is automatic, you do not need to register it. Mind now at rest.

    5 stars amazing

Can't reccomend enough! I use these in my work helmets I'm a tree surgeon and I'm in trees all day and need to constantly communicate with my groundsman, I have not had 1 issue with them, the sound quality is amazing, there wired into my ear mufs what protect your ears so with the speakers inside there, so when I stream music to both devices the quality is on par with my bose qc35, now if they was in a moto bike helmet I think there would be a lot of road noise inside, that's why there's mixed reviews, we work within 100m at all times so not sure of the true range, batery lasts all day, make answer calls with 1 button, absolutely worth the money for my job,

Great sound and easy connection. I was going to buy a cheaper item. Really glad I spent the extra.

    Great bit of kit.

These are expensive, but excellent. I've used radios with bar mounted PTT buttons before but these are far easier to use and give a much higher audio quality than any radio I've used. They come paired with each other from the factory so once fitted, all you have to do is turn them on then simply push the big dial once to connect the intercom feature and that's it; two way communication with no further button pressing involved. At higher speed of 60-70mph, the audio is still clear, though you may have to turn the volume up a bit depending on how loud your bike is and how well sealed your helmet is. Easy to fit, easy to use and an excellent buy
